A Third Type of Interview

Everyone knows what an Employment Interview is for. Almost everyone is familiar with the Exit Interview – a conversation that is hopefully taking place when an employee has given notice that they’re leaving. Exit interviews are designed to assist with employee retention, the theory being that if you find out about a situation or area of the business that could use some improvement or change, you can try to fix it, thus preventing another employee for leaving for those same reasons. This is great information - if you can get it and if you really act on it. The only problem here, is that you’re acting too late to salvage the one walking out the door. This is the same person that is likely one of your best and didn’t have to stick around for lack of outside options.

When a Manager is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Have you ever worked for, or with someone who seemed to have two different personalities? Fortunately, I haven’t had a boss like that. Mine were either consistently nice, or of the not so nice variety but I usually knew who was showing up at the office every day. It’s hard to know what and who to trust as a source for information, and we all have our own opinions about that. It’s led to some “interesting” conversations with family and friends, and by interesting, I mean political.

Risky Business

I’ve been in the Human Resources field for longer than I care to admit. I’ve been a business owner for not very long in comparison. One thing I know is that HR is a big part of my business. I have years of experience, have worked in many different types of organizations, I have my degree in Human Resources Management, and I have two certifications from HR professional organizations that deem me competent. You could say that I’m well-qualified to work in Human Resources, right?

Since going into business for myself though, I’ve quickly learned what I am not well-qualified to do and what I’m just plain not good at doing. Believe me, I have tried to tackle many things on my own and it just isn’t possible to do it all. I’ve tried to educate myself on different things thinking that I could save some money, and I’m quickly learning that sometimes, you really do need to spend money to make and/or save money.
