In sitting down to write this today, I had a tough time getting started. I know it’s because of the strange and scary time we’re living in right now. None of us really know what to expect but are all hoping that life will become “normal” again in the near future. Undoubtedly both employers and employees will be taking stock of their respective situations and making some changes going forward. Let’s examine the 3 most common reasons that people change careers/jobs.
I didn’t want to start this blog with another headline about the Coronavirus or COVID-19 – however you want to reference it, because I just need a mental break from it! My small business owners have been reeling over the last couple of weeks with the immense pressure and new legislation to follow. I get it – it’s so much information with weaves and twists that make it confusing, and they just want to get it right. My coaching clients are wondering if they should even bother to look for work right now and I understand that too – we know that some industries are hiring while others are hunkering down and cutting back for short-term survival.
It’s a few days past the New Year and I love this time of year. I could do without the cold weather, but at the beginning of the year I just have so much hope. I want to feel like this every day if I can. Full of possibilities and positive energy. Geez, I almost can’t stand myself!
If planning to get a new job or start a new career or “second life” is on your list for 2020, you need a plan. If you know what you want to do, congratulations! That’s half the battle, but you still need a strategy and a plan to get what you want. If you don’t know what you want, or only know what you don’t want to do, you definitely need a plan my friend. Yes, you could just wing it, but chances are you’ll still be waiting for inspiration 3 months down the road. You might be completely confused and overwhelmed or maybe you will have taken a job similar to the one you left (the one you couldn’t stand anymore) or something so far out of your comfort zone, you are expecting to be fired “any day now”… You can do better!
“Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.” I’ve read this saying, and I’ve heard people say it, but I can’t say that I know too many people who are living it – at least at face value. The saying implies that if you love what you’re doing, you’re never going to have a bad day at work, a day where you don’t feel like going in or someone criticize your work, etc. Every day is one big joyous day of happiness.
I love this time of year. It’s so busy and fun-and stressful for sure, but somehow things get done. Most of us are buying gifts for family and friends, but also are donating money and gifts to help people we don’t know, so they can have a better holiday and hopefully a better lease on life. We find our compassion and humanity. For a few moments, hours, days at the end of the year, most of us are at our best and time slows down. It’s magical….
It’s also the time when we reflect on ourselves too. The annual New Year’s resolution. What do I want to do differently or better in the upcoming year? What’s got to change? What do I really want to do? I can’t take another year like last year…. Yep – I think a lot of people don’t even bother to make a resolution – who needs that kind of pressure, right? I read a blog the other day that said it was a pointless waste of time to make a New Year’s resolution, that it never works. On the surface, I might almost agree with that. However, I would rather take a more optimistic approach to life. If I want to be negative, I’ll watch the news or read that blog again. I won’t get too “woo-woo” on you, but I would rather embrace the laws of attraction, simply stated, put positivity out and positivity comes in. Is it a guarantee? I suppose not. Does it hurt anything? Definitely not!
